Historic Renovation

Historic Storefront Restoration and Upfit | Mast General Store

Team: Specialty Woodworks with Architect: Garvin Design Group; Contractor: Mashburn Construction

Client’s Need: Re-create historic storefront, create custom woodwork on interior, re-create windows with historic profiles in 28 loft apartments

Challenges: Matching the historic profile of the original windows and updating with today’s technology including the use of balancers to make windows operational, insulated glass units and hand applied putty glaze exterior to meet historic requirements

Results: Restored historic storefront on two streets, matched and built 70 historic operable windows, built monumental staircase, trim, cabinets and counters inside the upstairs loft apartments. Restoring the storefront façade to its 1920s Efird’s department store days and replicating the building’s original windows helped the renovation qualify for the National Registry of Historic Places.
